ESG + In-House Counsel: Navigating New Responsibilities

Sponsored by lawson lundell the canadian bar association

Companies of all sizes are experiencing an increased focus on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues, with climate change, social justice, diversity and inclusion, and sustainability becoming critical considerations. While in-house counsel play a key role in supporting ESG-related initiatives, and advising their executive teams and board members on risks and opportunities, there are concerns about the impacts of disclosing ESG data to the public, such as environmental disclosure that could increase the legal and regulatory exposure of a company.

Our panelists will look at how in-house counsel can contribute and add value to their organization’s ESG efforts today by ensuring their role goes beyond late-stage ESG disclosure review; helping identify and oversee ESG metrics and disclosure frameworks; and supporting executives and board members in navigating fast-changing ESG expectations by investors, consumers, communities and suppliers.
