Mercury Rising: Understanding Digital Economics

WORKSHOP 401

*Sponsored by Thomson Reuters

Legal services have felt the business ramifications of the “digital economy” for the last decade. These changes coincide with major evolutionary trends affecting in-house work from the rise of alternative legal service providers, to the increased frequency of more work moving in-house. Overall traditional legal service models are being forced to evolve under guidelines of value, efficacy, and the digitization of modern commerce. It is no secret that digital competition shrinks value across a market where fewer effective players are cornered and forced out. This exercise produces an environment that is advantageous for the end consumer, but hyper-competitive for the corporation. It leads to an outcome where products and services inevitably become obsolete or lose value in the market.

Travel agents, GPS devices, cameras, and taxis are examples of products or services seemingly outmoded by rampant digital disruption. This presentation explores the economic impact of digitization across industries. Our speakers will address how and why certain sectors remain acutely vulnerable to disaggregation, as well as why many digital strategies fail despite the best of intentions.
